Natural Ways to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances

Stainless steel appliances upgrade kitchens to give them a more modern look, but dirt and grime can show up easily on the sleek surface. Instead of spending money on commercial products, clean stainless steel appliances often with items you have in your kitchen pantry. Common household items work without damaging stainless steel so it can last for many years.
  1. Baking Soda

    • Baking soda acts as a mild abrasive so it removes tough grime without scratching the surface of your stainless steel appliances. When you clean with baking soda, mix it with water to create a paste you can apply to the surface. Add 1 qt. of warm water to 1/4 cup of baking soda, and stir them until a thin paste forms. Once you create the paste, simply dampen a washcloth with it, and wipe it over the stainless steel surface. Rinse the solution off with a clean and soft washcloth, and dry the surface with a microfiber towel.

    White Vinegar

    • White vinegar cleans stainless steel surfaces, and it neutralizes odors. If you do not have white vinegar, you can use apple cider vinegar. Both vinegars shine appliances and remove light stains. Dampen a washcloth with the vinegar, and wipe the surface of the appliance gently. After you wipe the surface, dry it with a towel to prevent streaks from forming. White vinegar does not need to be rinsed from the surface.

    Club Soda

    • Club soda, sometimes referred to as soda water, removes streaks from stainless steel appliances. Wipe the appliances down with a washcloth or paper towels dampened with the club soda. After you remove the streaks, rinse the surface off with clean water to prevent film from forming. Dry the appliance with a soft towel to remove the moisture.

    Dish Soap

    • A mild liquid dish soap mixed with hot water removes streaks from stainless steel, and it cleans it, as well. When you use dish soap, dilute it with hot water to create a sudsy solution. Combine 1 tsp. of liquid dish soap with 1 qt. of hot water. Dip a nonabrasive sponge or microfiber washcloth in the solution, and rub it onto the surface of the appliance in the direction of the grain. Always rinse the detergent off of stainless steel so a soap film does not remain. Dry the appliance with a towel or cloth.
