How to Change a Vacuum Brush Roll on a Dyson

The underside of your Dyson contains a bristle-lined bar. This “brush roll” stirs dirt and dust from carpet fibers, allowing the vacuum to gather them into the machine for later disposal. The brush roll also collects stray bits of floss, yarn and string that happen to be lying on the ground. Cutting these pieces away may require removing the brush roll from the cleaner head, then reinstalling it. Damaged brush rolls require replacement altogether.

Instructions

  1. Dyson Ball Upright

    • 1

Turn your Dyson Ball vacuum over to reveal the button on the underside of the cleaner head.

    • 2

Press the button and detach the cleaner head from the vacuum.

    • 3

Rotate the single fastener on the brush roll plate once counter-clockwise, using a flathead screwdriver. The head of the fastener resembles that of a screw.

    • 4

Twist the exposed end of the brush roll toward the front of the cleaner head. Slide the brush roll from the cleaner head.

    • 5

Twist the exposed end cap free of the brush roll.

    • 6

Fit the exposed end cap onto the replacement brush roll, and twist the cap in place.

    • 7

Slide the brush roll into the side of the cleaner head, and rotate the exposed end cap toward the cleaner head.

    • 8

Turn the brush roll plate fastener once clockwise.

    Dyson Upright

    • 9

Remove the debris bin from your Dyson upright vacuum. Lay your Dyson face down.

    • 10

Turn each of the three fasteners on the brush roll plate counterclockwise, using a flathead screwdriver. Grab the edges of the plate and carefully pull it away from the vacuum.

    • 11

Unclip both the brush roll edges from the cleaner head. The brush roll belt passes around one end of the brush roll. Twist the brush roll to free it of the belt.

    • 12

Fit the replacement brush roll through the belt. If necessary, carefully fit the screwdriver between the belt and brush roll for increased leverage.

    • 13

Adjust the brush roll so that the belt fits around the brush roll belt track.

    • 14

Match the brush roll plate with the three fastener tabs, and press the plate in place.

    • 15

Turn the three fasteners once to the right, using the screwdriver.
