Wood Pitch Removal

If you have ever cut trees or wood, the sticky substance that attaches to your cutting tool is wood pitch. Like all living organisms, trees, living or dead, contain liquid. Parts of the liquid are fatty acids, which form into resin. The resin made by the friction is called wood pitch. Wood chips contain approximately 1 to 5 percent wood pitch. Wood pitch sticks to the outside of your cutting tool and needs to be removed to avoid buildup.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 5 cups of water into a cooking pot.

    • 2

Heat the water until it boils.

    • 3

Pour the boiling water into a heat-resistant container. Insert the item and soak the item in the boiling water for 10 minutes. The hot water softens the wood pitch.

    • 4

Remove the item and scrub the wood pitch with steel wool. If the surface of the item is delicate, use a non-abrasive sponge.

    • 5

Scrape the surface of the item with a chisel or flat-head screwdriver to remove heavy buildup. If the surface of the item is delicate, wrap a soft cloth around the head of the chisel or flat-head screwdriver. Repeat Steps 3 and 5 until the wood pitch is removed.
