Advantages vs. Disadvantages of Front-Load Washing Machines

If you're in the market for a new washer, you'll find there are two styles from which to choose: front-loading and top-loading machines. Both have their pros and cons, depending on your needs. Although front loaders require that you bend over to load and unload your clothing, they have several other appealing features to consider.
  1. Space

    • Front loaders allow you to stack your washer and dryer, so they work well in tight spaces. If you live alone or otherwise have few laundry needs, front loaders come in compact sizes for even more space saving. Front loaders typically have more space than a top loader, so you can wash more clothes at once, saving time, and possibly money on soap.

    How They Wash

    • Many front-loading washers let you steam your clothing for optimal stain removal. Front loaders also flip and turn clothing to move it around through minimal water streams, while most top-loading washers use an agitator to turn clothes. The gentler washing method lengthens the life of clothing and fabrics. Front-load machines tend to clean heavily soiled clothes more thoroughly, according to Consumer Reports.

    Efficiency

    • Front-loading washers use less water than most top-loading styles, so they save money and water. They also have higher speeds for spin cycles, removing more moisture from fabrics so less time in the dryer is needed. While drying times may be shorter on a front loader, wash cycles are sometimes 30 minutes longer than similar cycles on top loaders, depending on how you customize the settings.

    More Considerations

    • Front loaders tend to vibrate noisily if you don't install them on reinforced flooring. The vibration can affect the washer over time and knick or damage the floor. Water can also get trapped inside more often in front-loading machines, leaving a moldy smell. Front-loading machines also don't allow you to open the machine during operation and add clothing, as you can with top-loading machines.
