How to Troubleshoot the Roomba Vacuum

The iRobot Roomba vacuum takes the work out of keeping a clean floor. This self-functioning unit moves around the floor and sucks up dirt without any guidance from a human being for up to 120 minutes on a full charge. Although it can clean floors without any assistance, it can't maintain itself. A depleted battery, full bin, a barrier or clogged sensors are three common reasons why a Roomba won't start.

Things You'll Need

  • Philips screwdriver
  • Scissors
  • Compressed air can

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the Roomba charger cable into the unit's Battery Charger Socket on its right side. Then plug the charger into the power outlet. Allow it to charge for 16 hours. The LED will be green when it is fully charged.

    • 2

Pick up the Roomba and place it down in an area free from any barrier to see if it restarts.

    • 3

Press the "Clean" button on the top of the Roomba if it doesn't restart in its new position. The Roomba should now restart itself.

    • 4

Press the tab on the front of the Roomba to dislodge the bin. Remove the bin and empty the debris.

    • 5

Pull the filter out of the bin compartment with your hand. Run warm water over the filter, and allow it to dry thoroughly before replacing it back in the bin compartment.

    • 6

Reinstall the bin in the Roomba, and try to restart it.

    • 7

Turn the Roomba over and look at each wheel. Remove any debris that is stuck on the wheels. Push the wheels in and out to ensure that they are able to turn easily.

    • 8

Push the two yellow tabs to dislodge the brush guard. Then remove the screws securing the side brush with a Philips screwdriver.

    • 9

Remove any string or hairs that could cause the brush not to turn using your hands and scissors. Also remove any debris from the bearings on the side of the brush. Then re-secure the brush and guard, and start the Roomba again.

    • 10

Turn the Roomba back over. With a compressed air can, clear out the cliff sensors under the front bumper. Try to start the Roomba again.

Listen for beeps. Seven or eight beeps indicate an error. Contact iRobot's customer care to fix the problem.
