How to Clean the Tops of the Cast Iron Grates on a GE Gas Stove

You use your GE gas stove for cooking everything from bacon to fried chicken, so it’s inevitable that its cast iron grates will get dirty from spattering food. Leaving cooked-on grime on the grates can interfere with how evenly your food cooks and can even damage the bottom of your cookware, so it's important to keep them clean. Ensure you get the gunk off while preserving the integrity of the original cast-iron surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the grates cool down completely after cooking.

    • 2

Fill the kitchen sink with hot water. Add a three to five drops of dish soap and mix well.

    • 3

Pick up the grates from the stove top and submerge them in the hot, soapy water. Scrub them with a rag to remove all visible signs of caked-on food or grease.

    • 4

Rinse the grates well under warm water. Dry completely before placing them back on the stove.

    • 5

Soak the grates in ammonia water if they have heavy buildup that won’t come off with soapy water. Put the grates in a large bucket or bowl and cover them with warm water. Add 1/4 cup ammonia. Cover the container and let the grates soak overnight. Wash the grates in hot, soapy water the next day and rinse and dry them well.
