How to Clean Starchy Buildup Off a Steam Iron

Starch makes your clothes crisp while ironing, but over time it can build up on the plate of your steam iron. This starchy buildup can leave spots on your clothes and interfere with how well your iron works. Wiping the plate with a rag and water often isn’t enough to get rid of the starch buildup. Clean your steam iron thoroughly with the right products to dissolve the buildup and keep your iron working properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for the iron to cool before cleaning it.

    • 2

Put a nickel-sized amount of plain white toothpaste onto a damp rag. Avoid using gel or abrasive toothpaste.

    • 3

Scrub the iron plate with the rag to remove the buildup. Rinse the plate with a clean, damp rag and dry it thoroughly.

    • 4

Moisten a clean rag with white vinegar if any starch buildup remains. Scrub the plate with the vinegar-soaked rag. If the buildup isn’t budging, use a steel wool pad and vinegar to scrub the plate. Rinse and dry the plate thoroughly.
