How to Clean Melted Sugar Off a Glass Cooktop

Glass cooktops usually are not difficult to clean until foods and spills burn on the surface. When you spill sugar on a glass cooktop, the high heat can melt it. Sugar syrups and sauces that contain sugar can also boil over onto the cooktop and leave behind an unpleasant stain. The thick, crusty melted sugar may look impossible to remove from the cooktop, but you can return the surface back to its original condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all pots, pans and utensils from the stove top once you notice the melted sugar stain. Wear an oven mitt to protect your hands from burns.

    • 2

Reduce the burner with the stain to the lowest setting.

    • 3

Soak up the spill by wiping the area with a folded clean dish washcloth. Wipe the spill quickly to prevent burning the washcloth and never touch the hot surface of the stove top with your hands.

    • 4

Turn off the burners and allow them to cool until they are slightly warm, but do not let the melted sugar harden completely if possible.

    • 5

Scrape the sugar stain off the glass cooktop by holding a razor blade at a 30-degree angle so that you do not scratch the surface.

    • 6

Allow the surface of the cooktop to cool completely. Clean any remaining burned sugar with a commercial glass cleaner. Follow the instructions on the cooktop cleaner carefully to prevent damage to the range.
