How to Clean Cooktop Vent Filters

It’s a good thing that the filters for vent hoods are hidden from public view; once you check under the hood, you might gasp at what you find. The thin, mesh-like screen is your vent filter, a magnet for collecting grease and gunk. If that’s what you see, at least it shows your filter is working and doing its job. Give it a helping hand by cleaning your vent filters to keep your cooktop ventilation system operating at peak performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electrical circuit to your stove by flipping the corresponding switch on your circuit breaker before you examine and clean the filter.

    • 2

Examine the filter to see how it's structured and attached. Most models are shaped as a square or rectangular mesh screen encased by a metal frame. Some will have a lever at the top that you simply slide clockwise to release the filter. Others may have screws that need to be taken out. Use the method that applies to your filter to remove it from the hood.

    • 3

Look for charcoal filter units in addition to the mesh wire screen attachment. Charcoal is used in units that circulate air rather than vent air outdoors. If your vent hood has a charcoal filter attachment, don't wash or clean it. Inspect for grease and grime buildup. If so, discard the charcoal filter unit, as it's not cleanable and replace it with a new one. Wash the mesh wire screen filter only.

Fill your sink with warm, soapy water and a degreasing product. Let the mesh filter soak in the solution long enough to dissolve the grease, perhaps 15 to 30 minutes.

    • 5

Rinse the filter after it's soaked sufficiently. If your sink has a sprayer, use this to help remove any embedded grease inside the mesh materials.

    • 6

Drain the dirty water and replenish the sink with warm water and detergent to remove any remaining traces of grease.

    • 7

Place the filter inside the top rack of your dishwasher for a final cleansing. This will prevent the mesh from coming into contact wish a harsh spray of water during the washing cycle, which might loosen the wire fibers of the filter. Set the dishwasher to the normal cycle for cleaning.

Replace the filter after it's thoroughly dry by snapping it back into place or securing with screws. Turn on the power to the stove at the circuit breaker.
