How to Get Rid of White Dust in a Humidifier

The white dust that appears on the surface of your humidifier is the result of minerals present in the water you use. These minerals release into the air and settle back onto the unit. While not harmful, it can be messy, but getting rid of the dust isn’t a difficult process. Remove it with a simple wipe-down, and keep it from recurring with a water change, a more consistent cleaning cycle for your unit and the possible addition of a demineralization cartridge.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off and unplug the humidifier from the electrical outlet. Empty the water from the unit.

    • 2

Use a brush to clean both the inside and the outside of the humidifier to remove all present dust. Then, use a cleanser created by mixing water with an equal amount of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. Rinse the unit out three times with tap water before drying and refilling.

    • 3

Fill the humidifier back up using bottled distilled water. The distilled water has a lower mineral content than other bottled or tap waters, lowering the creation of the scale that causes white dust on the humidifier.

Attach a demineralization cartridge to the unit following the manufacturer’s instructions to trap the minerals within the water before dispersal. This keeps the minerals from being released into the air.
