How to Clean a Gas Stovetop With Baked-On Food

Gas stovetops spend their lives getting splattered and splashed. Fresh spills and stains come off with a wet rag wipe. But when spills aren't wiped up promptly, they get baked on by the heat of the gas burners. These hard, stubborn stains resist scrubbing and using harsh scouring pads or powders may scratch the surface of the stovetop. To remove baked-on food without harming the stove, you must use gentle but effective methods.

  • Liquid detergent soap
  • Rag
  • Plastic putty knife
  • Baking soda

Instructions

      Turn off your stove and allow it to cool to room temperature.

      Moisten a rag with warm, soapy water -- roughly 1 teaspoon per 1 quart of water.

      Squeeze the rag out to saturate the affected area with soapy water. Don't apply so much that the soapy water drips into the stove. You may dampen the pilot light.

      Scrape off the baked-on stains with a plastic putty knife. Use short, forceful forward pushes with the blade of the putty knife held at a 45-degree angle to the stovetop.

      Wash the residue off with a soapy rag. If stubborn residue remains, try cleaning with a wet rag sprinkled with baking soda.

      Wipe all residue off of the stovetop with a rag moistened with clean water.

      Wipe the stovetop dry with a dry cloth.
