How to Get Rid of Calcium Deposits on a Dishwasher Heating Element

Calcium, or limescale, deposits build up gradually on your dishwasher's heating element as you use your dishwasher. If you have particularly hard water in your area, meaning the water is mineral-rich, you are more likely to get limescale. You cannot scrub this scale away but a common household acid can remove the deposits for you.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid dish soap
  • Nylon scrubbing sponge

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the bottom rack of your dishwasher and examine the area around the heating element. If there are food particles built up around the element, add a small amount of liquid dish soap to a nylon scrubbing sponge and scrub around the element.

    • 2

Pour 1 to 2 cups of white vinegar into the bottom of your empty dishwasher. Make sure that the vinegar covers your heating element.

    • 3

Let the vinegar sit in the bottom of your dishwasher for at least an hour.

    • 4

Run the empty dishwasher through a full wash cycle with the hottest water possible.
