How to Clean a Fridge Condenser

The condenser fan and coils on your refrigerator help keep the appliance working properly and efficiently. Dust, hair, dirt and other debris can accumulate in the condenser over time, which then causes the unit to use more energy to remain cool. Not only will this increase the cost of your utility bill, it can also shorten the lifespan of the refrigerator. Keep air flowing through the condenser properly by giving it a thorough cleaning at least every six months.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the refrigerator. Locate the condenser unit. It will either be on the bottom front of the unit or mounted to the back of the appliance. If it’s in the back, pull the refrigerator out from the wall so you can easily access the area.

    • 2

Remove the grill cover from the condenser. Most of these covers will simply lift off; however, if yours is attached with screws, use a screwdriver to remove the screws and lift off the cover.

    • 3

Vacuum the coils, fan blades and fan base with a vacuum attachment hose. If the dust and dirt are thick, use a coil brush to loosen the grime before vacuuming.

    • 4

Mix a solution of hot, soapy water into a bucket. Scrub any remaining dust, dirt or debris from the coils and fan unit. Rinse with a clean rag and dry the unit thoroughly.

    • 5

Reattach the cover and plug the refrigerator back into the power supply.
