How to Clean Limescale From the Dishwasher

If you've ever opened your dishwasher and seen a white, scaly residue inside your appliance, you're probably looking at limescale. This type of residue, which is also called hard water scale, forms when minerals found in tap water react with soap and other chemicals inside your dishwasher. Limescale can also form on your dishes, as well. Acidic cleaners are your best bet when treating limescale, but rather than buying expensive cleaners from the store, use an inexpensive household product to clean your dishwasher.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a glass or bowl with white vinegar, and place it in your dishwasher.

    • 2

Run the dishwasher through its regular cycle.

    • 3

Wet a nylon scrub pad with white vinegar, and use it to wipe down the inside of your dishwasher.

    • 4

Wet a toothbrush with white vinegar, and use it to scrub the limescale off of any areas that are hard to access with the pad.

    • 5

Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to create a cleaning paste for especially stubborn deposits. Dip a cloth into the mixture, and use it to rub off deposits. The baking soda acts as a mild abrasive, which helps to remove particles clinging to the surfaces of your dishwasher.
