How to Clean a Really Burnt Oven

A dirty oven that has burned food stuck to the surface is no joy to use. The old food spills become even more burnt on and difficult to remove each time you turn on the oven, causing the oven to smoke and produce unpleasant odors. Cleaning up the spilled food from inside after each use prevents it from burning and becoming hard to remove, but you can get out the old burnt spills even if you forget to wipe it frequently. Though it takes time and hard scrubbing, your oven can look like new again.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the oven racks. Place them in a sink filled with hot, soapy water to soak.

    • 2

Saturate a cleaning rag with ammonia. Lay the wet rag over the burnt-on food and allow it to soak for 30 minutes.

    • 3

Remove the ammonia-soaked rag. Wipe out as much of the burnt-on food as possible, using a clean rag soaked in hot water. Rinse and wet the rag with fresh water as often as necessary.

    • 4

Sprinkle any remaining burnt-on food residue with enough baking soda to coat it completely. Scrub up the remaining residue with a fine steel wool pad.

    • 5

Wipe out the oven with a clean wet rag, removing all the scum and loosened food residue. Wipe the oven dry with a clean rag.

    • 6

Scrub the oven racks with a dish scrubber or a steel wool pad. Rinse with clear water, dry, and place the racks back in the oven.
