How to Clean Up a Burnt Spill on a Flat Top Stove

The ability to wipe clean a flat cooktop stove is one of its most appealing qualities. Unfortunately, if you accidentally allow a spill to burn onto the stove’s surface, you could damage the appliance by using inappropriate tools and cleansers to remove it. Never use abrasive household cleansers or scouring pads on your cooktop, since they will degrade your stove’s glass or ceramic surface.

Things You'll Need

  • Razor scraper for flat cooktops
  • Soft cloths
  • Glass or ceramic cooktop cleaner

Instructions

    • 1

Turn down all burners and remove any cookware from your stovetop, if the spill just occurred.

    • 2

Scrape up the bulk the spill as quickly as possible using your razor scraper, and then use the scraper to slide the spillage over to a cooler area of the stove. Wipe up the spill from the cooler area with a soft cloth.

    • 3

Allow the range to cool completely. Loosen the burned spill by laying a damp rag over the area. Allow the moisture to transfer to the burned area for at least an hour before proceeding.

    • 4

Scrape at and flake away the remaining burned areas with the razor scraper; make sure the scraper is sharp and angled flat against the cooktop.

    • 5

Dampen a clean cloth and apply a dab of cleanser to the cloth’s wetted area. Wipe the area where you removed the spill to clean it completely.

    • 6

Wash out the cloth until it’s free of cleanser. Use the wet cloth to rinse at cleaning residue left on the flat stovetop.
