How to Remove a Plastic Bag From Glass Cooktops

Melted plastic on a glass cooktop can be difficult to remove. Abrasive scrubbers and steel wool can scratch and damage the cooktop's finish and are not recommended. Once you have peeled and picked the large, incompletely fused pieces of plastic from the cooktop, stubborn bits of melted plastic may still remain. Fortunately, with the right tools and cleaning supplies, your glass stove top can be restored to its original shine in only minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray window cleaner
  • Razor scraper
  • Paper towels
  • Glass-buffing paste
  • Sponge or soft rag

Instructions

Spray window cleaner onto the melted plastic. The window cleaning solution will seep under the edges of the plastic and penetrate microscopic holes to loosen the plastic from the stove top. Allow the cleaner to set on the plastic for two or three minutes.

Rest the blade of the razor scraper on the slightly warmed cooktop, near the edge of the melted plastic. Tilt the blade so it is almost parallel with the cooking surface. Wearing an oven mitt, apply light pressure as you slide the scraper across the glass, lifting the melted plastic. Wipe the plastic from the scraper with a paper towel, taking care not to cut your fingers. Continue scraping until all of the melted plastic has been removed.

Remove residual glass cleaner and bits of plastic, using a damp paper towel. Use a sponge or soft cleaning rag to apply glass-buffing paste to the stove top, as recommended by the manufacturer. Give the paste a few minutes to dry, until it becomes a chalky film. Buff the dried paste off the stove top with clean, dry paper towels.
