How to Clean Stains on Porcelain Caps on Cooktops

Porcelain caps and grates are both attractive and useful on gas cooktops. The porcelain conducts heat evenly and comes in gray, black or white to complement the color of your stove. However, spilled food can stain the porcelain caps. You may be able to remove the stain, depending on the type and how long it has existed. Prompt cleaning of spills can also prevent further staining. If one method of stain removal doesn't work, try another. Some stains, such as tomato, may permanently discolor the porcelain.

Instructions

  1. Cleansor

    • 1

Apply a mildly abrasive, non-scratching cleaner, such as a cream cleaner made for glass stovetops or fiberglass tubs. Let the cleaner set for a few moments to soften any burned-on food.

    • 2

Scrub the area with a non-scratch scrubbing pad. Reapply the cleaner and scrub again, if necessary.

    • 3

Rinse with clean water. Dry completely before you put the cap back onto the burner.

    Oven Cleaner

    • 4

Spread newspaper outside and set the caps on the paper.

    • 5

Spray the caps with oven cleaner. Let the oven cleaner set for one to two hours.

    • 6

Wash the caps in hot, soapy water. Dry thoroughly.
