How to Get Off a Plastic Bag Melted to the Oven Door

Sooner or later, just about everybody ends up with a bit of melted plastic on a cooking appliance, especially on a stove or toaster. A plastic bread wrapper is often the culprit. Plastic melted to glass surfaces often comes off with a razor scraper, but this may scratch the finish on an appliance. Enamel finishes on cooking appliances typically require polishing to remove the melted plastic. Buffing compound used for cars and glass may be too abrasive for your stove, so select one that is specially formulated for use on appliances.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick off the pieces of melted plastic that you are able to lift with your fingers. Avoid scraping the surface of the stove with hard or sharp objects that could scratch the oven's finish.

    • 2

Apply the buffing compound to the stove, using a soft rag or a sponge, as recommended by the manufacturer. Let the buffing compound dry for a few minutes, until it becomes a dry, chalky film.

    • 3

Buff the dried buffing compound from the oven door, using a soft cloth. Buff in small circles, using moderate pressure. Since the melted plastic is a softer material than the finish on the appliance, the abrasive particles in the buffing compound will tear and remove the melted plastic from the oven.

    • 4

Wipe the oven to remove any residual plastic particles or buffing compound.
