How to Get the Black Stuff Off the Rubber Seal on a Front-Loader Washer

The rubber seal on your front-loading washer helps to keep water from getting out of the machine. Over time, however, the constant moisture can cause black stuff -- mold -- to form on the rubber. This can create an unpleasant odor in the washer, which will transfer to your clothes. If left untreated, the mold will continue to spread along the rubber seal, so clean it at first sight.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash a spray bottle well to make sure there are no remnants of other cleaning products inside. Mix one part chlorine bleach with 10 parts water in the spray bottle.

    • 2

Empty all laundry from the washer. Wipe excess water from the rubber seal with a rag.

    • 3

Spray the bleach and water mixture generously onto the rubber. Wait 15 minutes.

    • 4

Scrub away the black spots with a clean rag. Apply more bleach solution and scrub some more until all of the spots are gone.

    • 5

Wash the seal with a clean rag and hot, soapy water to remove any residue. Run an empty cycle with just hot water to wash away any of the bleach lingering in the rubber. Dry the seal promptly.
