How to Clean a Diamond-Coated Knife Sharpener

Diamond-coated knife sharpeners are effective tools that come in two varieties: manual and automatic. Like any other tool or appliance, diamond-coated knife sharpeners need periodic cleaning. If the knives they sharpen are free of oil and debris and are cleaned properly before being sharpened, most diamond-coated knife sharpener blades will only need to be cleaned once or twice a year.

Instructions

  1. Automatic Diamond-Coated Knife Sharpener

    • 1

Wipe the casing of the automatic knife sharpener with a moist rag whenever you notice surface dust or debris.

    • 2

Remove any visible metal dust from in between the blades of the knife sharpener with a stiff spray from a canister of canned air. If your machine comes equipped with one, you may also be able to access, remove and empty a clean-out trap. Most clean-out traps only need to be cleaned out once every few months with regular use.

    • 3

Clean the blades of the diamond-coated automatic knife sharpener whenever they look dirty or stop working as effectively. Follow your machine's manufacturer instructions for cleaning methods. Many automatic knife sharpeners come with a specialized dressing pad you insert between the blades in place of a knife. As the sharpener rotates, it will clean itself on the pad. Do not dismantle the automatic knife sharpener unless the instructions explicitly instruct you to. If not instructed to do so, you may damage the machine and/or void your warranty.
