How to Clean Burnt Copper-Bottomed Pots

Copper-bottomed pots have a tendency to tarnish and burn with repeated use. If you leave them on the burner for too long, the pots will acquire a dark burnt patina on the bottom, making them look old. You can get them sparkling like new again using acidic food items like ketchup, vinegar and lemon, common household food items that can clear off the tarnish and get your copper-bottomed pots looking clean again.

Instructions

  1. Mayonnaise Paste

    • 1

Combine equal parts of salt, mayonnaise and flour in a bowl and mix the ingredients into a paste.

    • 2

Apply the paste evenly on the entire pot, focusing on the burnt copper bottoms. Rub the paste using circular motions with a cloth until you see the stains coming off.

    • 3

Remove the paste with another cloth, buffing and rinsing with warm water until the pot is clean. Repeat steps as necessary.

    Ketchup and Salt

    • 4

Mix ketchup or tomato sauce with a few teaspoons of salt, which creates enough gritty texture to clean the pan without being too abrasive.

    • 5

Rub the pot with a cloth, spreading the ketchup and salt mixture.

    • 6

Rinse the pot clean and repeat as needed.

    Clean the Inside

    • 7

Boil a quart of water in the pot and add a cup of vinegar with 1 teaspoon of salt.

    • 8

Allow the mixture to boil for five minutes. Turn off heat and let cool.

    • 9

Pour out the water and vinegar mixture into the sink and rinse clean.

    • 10

Rub the pot dry with a paper towel or washcloth.

    Lemon and Baking Soda

    • 11

Combine equal parts of baking soda and lemon juice in a bowl. Mix until you form a paste. Add more baking or lemon juice as need to create the proper consistency.

    • 12

Scrub the inside and outside of the pot with the mixture until the burns fade and you see the copper begin to shine.

    • 13

Rinse the mixture from the pot in the sink and dry with a clean cloth. Repeat as neessary.
