How to Get the Belt Off of the Bissell Carpet Shampooer

A peek inside a Bissell carpet shampooer reveals a pair of belts. These belts drive the brush roll beneath the vacuum and the pump inside the machine. Both the brush roll and pump provide crucial cleaning power. The brush roll removes stubborn dirt, while the pump dispenses cleaning fluid to the floor surface. Breaking either belt can spell a temporary end to your cleaning plans. Installing a new belt first requires removing the old one.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the handle release pedal at the bottom of your Bissell carpet shampooer. Place the handle flat on the ground.

    • 2

Grab the tank handle at the front of your vacuum and detach the tank from the vacuum. Some models of Bissell carpet shampooer also include a “Smart Mix” tank, located just in front of the main tank. Lift this tank straight up for removal.

    • 3

Locate the belt door on the side of your Bissell carpet shampooer. A notch in the side of the door allows for the door's removal.

    • 4

Insert the tip of a flat-bladed screwdriver into the notch, and pry the door away from the vacuum.

    • 5

Lay the vacuum on the side opposite the belt door. Note the red plate just behind the brush roll.

    • 6

Remove the screw from the side of the red plate using a slotted screwdriver. Detach the plate. Beneath the plate lies the brush belt arm.

    • 7

Detach the brush belt arm. Removing the brush belt arm reveals the end of the brush roll.

    • 8

Grab the belt attached to the brush roll and slide it off the side of the brush roll. Detach the other end of the belt from the red pulley.

    • 9

Lift the pump belt from the side of the red pulley. Detach the other end of the belt from the motor shaft just behind the red pulley.
