How to Clean a Porcelain Stovetop That Burned

A burn mark on a porcelain stovetop is an eyesore and a constant reminder that you have a cleaning task that needs your attention. Gas stoves with a porcelain, enamel-coated finish are especially at risk with burn marks because of their open flame. The burn-prone area for electric stoves is often right around the exposed heating coils. Always remove burn marks early on to prevent a testy and potentially cumbersome removal process.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any cookware from the burners so you can access and clean the burn marks without being encumbered. Wipe up spills with a paper towel to fully expose the burned area so you can clean it efficiently.

    • 2

Cover the coil burner from an electric stove or the burner grates from a gas stove with aluminum foil before cleaning the stovetop surface, or remove them to prevent them from being moistened while cleaning.

    • 3

Moisten a sponge or cloth with warm water, and add detergent to the cloth or sponge. If the burn mark is caked-on food, use a small amount of an abrasive cleaner or steel wool to loosen and lift the burned food matter. If you opt to use an abrasive, do so carefully. Gently scour the burned area with the cloth or sponge to lift as much of the brown film residue as possible.

    • 4

Examine the results after cleaning the burn mark. If there are any remaining traces, repeat the process of cleaning and lifting them away with detergent and abrasives. Remove remaining burn particles with a liquid-based degreaser application. Allow the degreaser to set on the remaining burned area for five minutes to activate and loosen the remaining particles on the burn stain, and follow the directions on the product label.

    • 5

Wipe away the remaining burn soil with a moistened sponge or cloth. Follow with a paper towel to dry the area. If there is any remaining residue, reapply the degreaser, and repeat the process.

    • 6

Buff the stovetop with paper towels to restore the shine and luster to the porcelain surface. Remove the foil from the burners.
