How to Make a Stove Top Spoon Holder

Cooking can be a messy job, with drips and spatters of sauce baking onto hot stove surfaces. One way to get a kitchen clean is to keep the mess to a minimum beforehand. Use a time-honored tool such as an old-fashioned spoon rest to keep your stirring spoon from staining the stove’s top. You and your children can spend an afternoon making personalized spoon rests for your stove or as gifts for family and friends. This useful tool will be doubly welcome because of the personal connection it has with your children.

Instructions

    • 1

Break off pieces of craft clay about the size of a quarter and squash them between your fingers to soften them. Add more pieces until you have two different-colored balls of clay, each about the size of a plum.

    • 2

Smash the two colors of clay together, pulling and manipulating, until the clay has a marbled look.

    • 3

Place the clay ball on a clean work surface. Roll the clay ball out until it is about a quarter-inch thick.

    • 4

Place your child's hand onto the flattened clay surface with her fingers splayed out. Draw around her entire hand with a skewer, making a line in the clay surface.

    • 5

Cut out the hand outline with a sharp paring knife. Lift up the hand cutout and drape it over the bottom of an upside-down oven-safe glass mixing bowl. This will curve the hand into a rest to hold the spoon bowl.

    • 6

Place the bowl upside down with the clay hand on top into a 270 degree Fahrenheit oven. Allow the clay to bake for 30 minutes. Check the manufacturer's directions to ensure you bake the clay long enough, as some brands need longer baking times.

Remove the bowl with pot holders and place it on the counter until it is completely cool. Your spoon rest is usable as soon as it reaches room temperature.
