What Can You Soak Range Grates in to Degrease Them?

Stove top burners are subject to grease spills that build up over time. When you use the stove top range, the heat causes the grease to bake onto the grates. Greasy range grates look unpleasant and can discolor your cookware. Cleaning spills after every meal and wiping down the burner grates helps prevent grease from building up on the surface. If the grates need to be degreased, clean them, once the burners cool down completely, to keep them in good condition.
  1. Dish Soap

    • If you need to remove the grease from stove top grates, grab some liquid dish soap. Place the grates into the kitchen sink and add two to three drops of dish soap then run hot water into the sink. Let the grates soak in the warm and soapy water for 30 minutes to one hour. Soaking the grates loosens up the burned grease and food debris. After you soak the grates, scrub them with a sponge or stiff scrub brush. After you've cleaned the grates, rinse them under cool water and let them air-dry.

    Ammonia

    • Sometimes stove top grates are difficult to clean, especially if you neglect them for many months. While you're soaking the grates in hot, soapy water, add 1 teaspoon of ammonia to the solution. The ammonia helps loosen the grease from the grates. Soak the grates for 30 minutes then scrub them with a stiff brush. If the grease remains on the grates, you may need to soak them in the water longer. Always rinse the grates off with clean water and let them dry before you replace them on the stove top.

    Baking Soda

    • Burnt-on grease and food residue often remains on the burner grates after you soak them for hours. Instead of scrubbing the grates, loosen the burned stains with a baking soda paste. Create a paste by mixing an equal proportion of baking soda and water then apply it to the stains with a sponge. Let the paste soak on the stains for 15 to 20 minutes then scrub the area with a non-scratch pad and rinse it with cool water. Return the burners to the stove top once they air-dry.

    Oven Cleaner

    • If everyday household products are not effective in cleaning the burner grates, use a commercial oven cleaner to degrease them. Place newspapers outside on a flat surface then set the stove top burners on top of them. Apply the oven cleaner onto the grates, according to the directions on the product. After you apply the oven cleaner, let the grates soak outside for one to two hours then put them in the kitchen sink with hot, soapy water to remove the oven cleaner residue. Rinse off the burners then dry them thoroughly before putting them back on the stove top.
