How to Clean a Burnt Pizza Stone

Bakers know that to create a crisp and chewy bread or pizza crust, you need a stone oven. At home, this is replaced by a pizza stone. Because a pizza is cooked directly on top of the stone, burns and stains can happen. The porous surface of pizza stones can make complete removal of the burn difficult, but you can safely get most of the burn out with an item that is likely in your cabinet, baking soda.

Instructions

    • 1

Cool the pizza stone completely after cooking with it.

    • 2

Rub the burned area with a dry scouring pad to remove stuck-on food.

    • 3

Sprinkle baking soda liberally over the burned area.

    • 4

Lightly dampen the end of a nylon scrub brush and rub it into the baking soda. Drizzle more water on top of the baking soda if needed to make a thick paste with the consistency of toothpaste.

    • 5

Scrub the baking soda into the burned area and rinse it off.

    • 6

Repeat the baking soda treatment and rinsing it off with clear water until most of the burn is gone.

    • 7

Wipe the pizza stone dry with a soft towel and place it on the floor or the bottom rack of your oven. This safely stores the pizza stone and helps to regulate the temperature inside your oven.
