Smooth-top ranges, otherwise known as halogen glass cooktops, have a flat cooking surface. Although the electric coils are similar to those on other stoves, they're underneath the surface, and the heat is distributed through a glass top that looks smooth and modern. Incorrectly cleaning these cooktops can result in food residue burning and hardening. Smears can also become charred, turning into burned-on ash that resists cleaning. As a result, you may scratch the top as you try to clean it. Correctly cleaning your range top will keep it smooth, shiny and scratch-free.

1
Fill a spray bottle with warm water.
-
2
Pour one box of baking soda into a bowl.
-
-
3
Wet a sponge in warm water. Dab the sponge into the baking soda, allowing it to cake on the sponge.
-
4
Scrub the residue with a soft but consistent pressure that allows the baking soda to do most of the work. The baking soda will dissolve into the residue, and the water will soften it.
-
5
Rinse the stove top, using the spray bottle of warm water. Wipe the surface dry with a soft cloth.
-
6
Test the surface with your fingers, locating any missed spots. Scrub any remaining spots, again using a damp sponge caked with baking soda.
-
7
Rinse again and dry again, using the spray bottle and a clean cloth.
