Removing Stainless Steel Scratches With Scotch-Brite

The 3M Corporation makes a line of Scotch-Brite products, with stainless steel curly scrubbers the best known. These particular scrubbers, however, are not appropriate for use on the stainless steel in your kitchen as they may add scratches. A 3M stainless steel cleaner and polish in aerosol form masks blemishes, such as scratches on your stainless steel appliances. Using the stainless cleaner and polish with the Scotch-Brite light scrubbing pad or cleansing sponge decreases the visibility of scratches on your stainless steel appliances.

Instructions

  Determine the direction of the grain of your stainless steel item or appliance. You can see that the fine lines like threads run in one direction either horizontally or vertically on the surface.

  Spray the 3M Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish onto the Scotch-Brite light scrubbing pad or cleansing sponge. The spray is a white foam with a citrus odor.

  Rub the stainless steel appliance in the direction of the grain, spreading the foam cleaner with the Scotch-Brite pad or sponge. You can use some pressure with the No. 9030 Scotch-Brite light scrubbing pad or No. 63 cleansing sponge without damaging the stainless steel, so long as you work in the direction of the grain.

  Wipe the stainless steel item with a clean, dry cloth to remove any traces of the white foam cleaner. Turn the dry cloth over and buff the area by rubbing in the direction of the grain.
