How to Clean Water Scales in a Scotsman Ice Machine

Limestone and other minerals and chemicals in water will accumulate on the interior of your Scotsman residential ice machine. Over time, this scaling creates a hardened crust that can reduce the efficiency of the machine and make ice form in irregular shapes. It can also clog the drain. As of October 2011, the Scotsman Brilliance 30-pound SCC30 and 50-pound SCC50 models and Luxury DCE33 models have similar systems. As a result, you can use almost the same process to remove scale deposits from the reservoir, bin, bin liner and drain.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-gallon or larger buckets or tubs
  • Freezer (optional)
  • Large cooler (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Scotsman ice machine. If you have a Brilliance programmable SCC50 model, press and hold the “On/Off” button until the green LED light turns off.

    • 2

Open the machine and scoop out all of the ice into a bucket or tub. Place the ice in a freezer or large cooler, use it, or toss it. If you have a Brilliance SCC50, press and hold “Clean/Reset” and “On/Off” for approximately five seconds. You will see the “Time to Clean” LED blink.

    • 3

Pour Scotsman Ice Machine Scale Remover and Cleaner into the reservoir. If you have an SCC50 model, use 8 ounces of cleaner. If you have a Luxury DCE33 model, use 4 ounces.

    • 4

Close the door on your ice machine. Turn on the machine and wait for it to make ice. For SCC50 models, wait half an hour, press “On/Off,” wait another half an hour, then press “On/Off” again. For the SCC30 and DCE33 models, simply wait two hours.

    • 5

Fill a gallon jug with hot -- 90 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit -- water. Open your Scotsman ice machine and pour the gallon of water over the ice that formed in the bin.

    • 6

Refill the jug with hot water and add 2 tablespoons of Scotsman cleaner to the water. Dampen a lint-free microfiber cloth with the solution, then wipe the scale off the bin liner. When finished, rinse the liner thoroughly in hot water.

    • 7

Fill a 2-gallon bucket with hot water. Add 1 ounce of household bleach to make a sanitizer. Pour the sanitizer into the jug.

    • 8

Pour some of the sanitizer down the drain in your machine. Wipe the bin with a cloth dampened with sanitizer.

    • 9

Wait for the surfaces to dry. Return the ice to your machine and turn the machine on. Or simply turn on your machine to start making ice again.
