How to Fix a Belt on a Dyson Animal

Dyson manufactures a variety of vacuum cleaners for customers with specific cleaning needs. The Dyson Animal is the vacuum model that specializes in picking up animal hair and dander. The belt on a Dyson Animal can slip and come loose or break. Fixing the belt is standard maintenance on any Dyson vacuum and is not covered under the unit's limited five-year warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the vacuum from the electrical outlet. Lay the vacuum cleaner on the floor by taking the handle and tipping the vacuum over until the handle rests on the floor. The base plate is on the bottom of the vacuum and is accessible after laying the vacuum down.

    • 2

Locate the three screws on the base plate. On a Dyson Animal, the screw areas are highlighted by a purple plastic casing. Remove the three screws with a flat head screwdriver and remove the base plate to expose the vacuum’s brush roll.

    • 3

Remove the brush roll. If the belt is not broken and has just slipped, re-attach it to the brush roll. If the belt is broken, pull it off and take it into an authorized Dyson dealer for a replacement. Attach the new belt to the brush roll on the section of the brush roll with no brushes. The brush roll is marked where the belt attaches. Put the brush roll, with the belt attached, back into the vacuum while sliding the belt into the belt slot.

    • 4

Hold the end of the belt and stretch it to attach it to the metal motor shaft. Attaching the belt requires some effort because you will stretch the belt approximately 1 inch to reach the metal shaft.

Ensure the brush roll spins properly by rolling it manually. Replace the base plate then reattach the three screws with the flat head screwdriver. Set the vacuum upright. Plug the unit in and turn it on to ensure it's functioning properly.
