Cover the pizza stone with a thick layer of salt and lightly dampen the salt.
Rest the stone overnight with the salt covering to lift off any food stuck on the surface that could be causing the odors. Brush off the salt under running water with a nylon dish brush.
Coat the surface of the pizza stone with a thick paste of baking soda and water. Let the mixture sit for at least one hour for the baking soda to neutralize odors in the pores of the pizza stone.
Scrub the baking soda off the stone with a nylon brush under running water.
Soak the pizza stone for one hour in clear water to remove residual soap that might have gotten into the pores of the pizza stone.
Drain the stone on a soft towel until it no longer feels wet to the touch.
Place the pizza stone on the floor of a self-cleaning oven or under the broiler of a cold oven.
Turn the oven on broil for 30 minutes or set it for the self-cleaning cycle to burn away any odor-causing particles in the stone.
Cool the stone in the oven completely before rinsing any residue off with clear water.
Place a sheet of parchment paper between the pizza and the pizza stone the next time you cook to take advantage of the heat transfer properties of the pizza stone without bits of the pizza getting onto the stone and causing odors or stains.
