How to Remove the Smell of Shrimp From the Fridge

Fresh shrimp has a mild odor that smells quite similar to the ocean, but shrimp that is past its prime and has remained in the refrigerator a little too long can put off an unmistakable fishy odor. If your refrigerator has begun greeting you with an odor that offends the nose and sends appetites packing, it’s time to take action. No harsh chemicals are needed to fight this odor, just a few household items and a little time.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the shrimp from the refrigerator and discard it immediately.

    • 2

Remove everything else from the refrigerator and inspect it for the offending smell. If juices from improperly packaged shrimp have leaked onto other foods, they will need to be discarded if not properly packaged.

    • 3

Set foods that are safe to go back into the refrigerator into an ice chest during the cleaning process to keep them cool.

    • 4

Remove the shelves and trays and wash them with warm soapy water.

    • 5

Wipe down the inside of the refrigerator with a solution of 2 cups hot water and two tablespoons baking soda using a sponge or cloth.

    • 6

Leave the door to the refrigerator open for at least 15 minutes to allow it to air dry.

    • 7

Place the food back into the refrigerator once the odor is gone.
