How to Install a Dyson Belt

Dyson vacuums use a belt to drive the brushroll and aid in cleaning carpeted surfaces. The belt has to handle the stress of rotating the brush as well as the heat created by friction. One of the more frequent maintenance needs is removing and replacing the belt. Poor performance and an absence of the low tone of the brushroll rotation signifies a broken or worn belt. Replace the belt to restore the Dyson's capability to effectively clean your carpet.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Dyson vacuum cleaner from the wall outlet for safety.

    • 2

Press the handle release lever located on the side at the base of the Dyson's handle. Lower the handle so that the vacuum is flat on the floor.

    • 3

Turn the Dyson cleaner over so that the underside of the cleaning head is facing up. Locate the three fasteners holding the cleaning head plate on the bottom of the cleaning head.

    • 4

Detach the fasteners with a flat-head screwdriver. Lift the plate from the cleaning head and set it aside.

    • 5

Inspect the brushroll. Remove hair and carpet string that may be wrapped around the roll. Use scissors to cut the strands from the brush roll if you are unable to remove them easily by hand.

    • 6

Find the belt. The belt will be wrapped around the brush roll if it is still intact. If the belt has broken completely, search inside the cleaning head to find it.

    • 7

Pull the brushroll straight from the cleaning head. Slide the belt, if it is still wrapped around the roll, to the side of the brushroll until it is no longer wrapped around it.

    • 8

Remove the belt from the motor shaft protruding from a recessed section of the main cleaning head.

    • 9

Place the new belt around the brushroll with the tread side against the brush-roll. Position the belt on the indented section of the brushroll.

    • 10

Align the brushroll near the cleaning head. Pull the belt with your finger and wrap it around the motor shaft inside the cleaning head. Use a blunt tool to wrap the belt around the motor shaft if you are unable to stretch it around the shaft by hand.

    • 11

Reinsert the edges of the brushroll into the slots on either side of the Dyson's cleaning head.

    • 12

Place the cleaning head plate back on the bottom of the Dyson cleaning head. Tighten the three fasteners on the bottom of the plate with the screwdriver.

    • 13

Spin the brushroll by hand to ensure that it moves freely after the belt installation.
