How to Remove a Clog in a G6 Kirby Vacuum

A poorly performing Kirby G6 can be the result of a number of causes. A full dirt collection bag and a damaged fan are two reasons for a Kirby's lack of cleaning power. Another culprit could be a clogged vacuum. The area between the cleaning head and the Kirby's fan may have a lodged item of clothing or toy restricting airflow and slowing or stopping the brush-roll's spinning. Troubleshoot the Kirby G6 to find and remove the clog and restore the effectiveness of the cleaner.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Kirby from the wall outlet to prevent injury during the maintenance.

    • 2

Press the height adjustment lever to raise the cleaning head to the highest level. The lever is located on the right side of the Kirby's main cleaning head.

    • 3

Lift the cover in the front of the machine. The front cover contains the G6's headlamp and allows access to the lever used to remove the front of the cleaning head.

    • 4

Pull the small handle from the front of the cleaning head, located under the cover, and turn it counterclockwise as far as it will go.

    • 5

Locate the cleaning head retaining lever above the small handle. Use your thumb to rotate the lever from left to right to release the cleaning head. Pull the front of the cleaning head from the main machine head.

    • 6

Inspect the fan located behind the front cleaning head. Look for obstructions that may clog the Kirby or prevent the fan from spinning. Cut away any strings or strands of hair and carpet fiber with a pair of scissors.

    • 7

Inspect the front cleaning head you previously removed. Turn the cleaning head around so that the silver plate on the bottom of the part is visible. Pry the two clips on the bottom of the plate toward the outside of the cleaning head to release the plate from the cleaning head.

    • 8

Remove the plate and look inside the cleaning head. Remove any obstructions blocking the airflow into the Kirby. Use scissors to cut any strands wrapped around the brush-roll.

    • 9

Look into the cleaning head. You should be able to see straight through from the area where the brush-roll is situated to the opening in the back of the cleaning head leading to the fan.

    • 10

Place the cleaning head plate back in place and rotate the clips at the bottom of the plate inward to secure the plate.

    • 11

Place the cleaning head back onto the front of the main cleaning head and rotate the small lever from right to left to secure the front cleaning head.

    • 12

Rotate the handle on the front of the front cleaning head clockwise as far as it will go. Replace the handle against the front of the cleaning head. Lower the cover on the front of the Kirby to complete the maintenance.
