How to Get Burned Plastic Off a Cooktop

When a bread bag or a plastic bowl is accidentally placed on a hot cook top, the plastic will melt. If not dealt with while still soft, the plastic will harden on the stove top, leaving a difficult mess that will last until it is physically removed. Even after the melted plastic is removed, a permanent discoloration may develop. With the proper tools and quick action, the burned plastic can be removed and the chance of a permanent stain on the stove reduced.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the cook top off. Remove the plastic item that melted on the stove. Do not try to remove the burnt plastic yet.

    • 2

Fill a sandwich bag with several ice cubes. Hold the ice cube-filled bag over the burned plastic for several minutes until the plastic becomes hard and brittle.

    • 3

Scrape the burned plastic carefully off the cook top with a window scraper that has a razor blade attach. When scraping, apply a gentle and light pressure as not to damage the surface of the stove top.

    • 4

Hold the ice cube-filled bag on the plastic if resistance is met, and continue scraping until the burned plastic has been removed.

    • 5

Dampen a clean sponge in cold water. Cover one side of the sponge with baking soda. Scrub the cook top gently with the baking soda.

    • 6

Wipe the baking soda residue off the stove with a damp paper towel and dry with a lint-free cloth.
