Grinding Noises in a Eureka Canister Vacuum 6865

The Eureka canister 6865 is an older model vacuum that uses a bag to hold dirt and debris. Many newer models use a dust collection container instead of a bag. Eureka offers a one-year warranty; and because the 6865 is an older model, the warranty has expired. Grinding noises in the vacuum can be caused by a number of issues but can be addressed through standard maintenance.

Turn on the vacuum and listen to the canister and base of the power wand. The noise will come either from the canister or the power wand attachment for the vacuum. Grinding noises are caused by obstructions in the brush roller, a defective motor or poor maintenance. General maintenance includes cleaning or replacing parts, filters or the bag. After locating the noise, turn off the vacuum and unplug it from the wall.

Remove the lid from the canister then remove the bag. The canister on the 6865 model holds the vacuum bag, the filters and motor. Remove the motor filter and the sound foam, which muffles the noise from the motor. Rinse out the filter and sound foam thoroughly under running water until the water appears clean. Allow the filter and foam to air-dry. Remove the exhaust filter from the back of the canister. Rinse it with water and allow it to air-dry. Check the empty canister for any dust and debris. Use a clean paintbrush to remove the dust and debris from the canister. Wipe down the canister with a damp rag.

Turn the power wand over to expose the base plate that covers the brush roller. The power wand can get dirty and collect obstructions in the brush roller over time. The grinding noise may be something stuck in the brush roller, causing it to hit the edges when the vacuum is operating. Because the 6865 is an older model, removing obstructions and cleaning dirt and debris collected over time should allow the vacuum to operate quieter. Unscrew the base plate cover with a Phillips head screwdriver. Lift out the brush roller and belt. Cut away any obstructions, such as string, hair or rubber bands, from the brush roller. Wipe the brush roller and belt with a damp rag to remove any dirt and allow them to air-dry. Wipe down the brush roller housing and inside the base plate with the damp rag.

Reassemble the machine after all of the parts are dry. Change the vacuum bag if necessary. Turn on the machine to check for noise. If the noise is not quieted or as loud as it was previously, it may be caused by the motor itself. Motor repairs can be done by an authorized Eureka dealer and repair store. Noises are typically from standard wear of the vacuum.
