Fixing the Belt on a Kirby G4 Vacuum

The Kirby G4 vacuum cleaner can be used as a traditional upright vacuum as well as a canister vacuum. To change the Kirby from one mode to another, you need to lift the belt from the motor shaft to ensure it is in the proper position for each of the possible Kirby positions. When repairing, inspecting or replacing the belt, you need to remove the cleaning head the same way you would to convert the Kirby to clean your home.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the Kirby vacuum cleaner.

    • 2

Lift the cleaning head to its highest setting to make removing the head and working on the belt as easier. Press the height adjustment lever to the left of the main part all the way down to the floor.

    • 3

Lift the hood at the front of the Kirby. Pull the small handle from the front of the cleaning head and use it to twist the belt hook and lift the belt from the motor shaft inside the cleaning head. The arrow on the top of the small handle starts in the position labeled "belt on." After you twist the handle all the way around counterclockwise, the arrow indicates "belt off."

    • 4

Force the cleaning head lock, located immediately above the top of the cleaning head, to the left. The cleaning head will fall forward, indicating that the belt has been lifted from the motor shaft and that the cleaning head can be removed.

    • 5

Lift the cleaning head from the front of the machine and remove it from the main part of the Kirby.

    • 6

Turn the handle on the front of the cleaning head clockwise to release the belt from the belt hook.

    • 7

Force both of the clips on the bottom of the cleaning head toward the outside of the head with your thumbs, pushing the left clip to the left, the right clip to the right. Remove the metal plate from the bottom of the Kirby's cleaning head.

    • 8

Slide the brush-roll from the slots at either end of the Kirby's cleaning head. Pull the belt from the brush-roll.

    • 9

If you wish to replace the belt, slide the new one onto the brush-roll and position it in the center of the two rows of bristles.

    • 10

Place the brush-roll back into the cleaning head. Slide the two plastic pieces on either end of the roll into the slots at either end of the inside of the cleaning head. Replace the metal plate onto the bottom of the Kirby's cleaning head and return the clips on each side to their locked positions (left clip to the right, right clip to the left).

    • 11

Turn the cleaning head upside down so that you can peer into the bottom of the cleaning head and see the brush-roll and newly installed belt. Grab the small handle on the front of the cleaning head and slowly rotate it counterclockwise. The belt hook will grab the belt as your rotate the handle and lift it to a position making it possible to put the cleaning head back onto the front of the main part of the Kirby.

    • 12

Place the cleaning head back onto the front of the Kirby. Look at the Kirby's cleaning head and main machine from the side so that you can see when the two hooks on the back of the cleaning head are resting on the bar in the front of the main machine part, just below the fan.

    • 13

Force the top of the cleaning head against the main machine part and rotate the locking lever from the left to the right on top of the cleaning head.

    • 14

Grab the small handle on the front of the cleaning head and rotate it clockwise so that the arrow on the top of the cleaning head goes from "belt off" to "belt on."

    • 15

Lower the hood on the front of the cleaning head and plug the Kirby into the wall outlet. Press the power button at the rear of the main cleaning machine and check the belt activity light on the far right corner of the cleaning head. An illuminated indicator light signifies a successful belt installation.
