Dyson Vacuum Cord Repairs

James Dyson invented "dual cyclone" technology for vacuum cleaners and later started the Dyson line of home cleaning and filtration products. The Dyson line of vacuum cleaners offers a five-year limited warranty. If the vacuum cord is not working, there are several options to replace the cord.
  1. Warranty

    • The five-year limited warranty covers malfunctions of the vacuum, including defects in the workmanship. If the cord stopped working because of a defect, the warranty will cover the costs of repairing and replacing the cord through Dyson directly or an authorized Dyson dealer. If the Dyson vacuum is older than five years or the cord is damaged due to circumstances such as animals chewing through it or improper storage, the repairs are at the owner’s expense.

    Quick Fix

    • If the Dyson cord is functioning but wires are visible from tearing or improper storage, the quickest solution is to cover the exposed area with electrical tape. Turn off the unit and unplug it from the electrical outlet. Remove the entire length of the cord and lay it straight on the floor. Find the exposed area and wrap electrical tape around it several times until the area is covered securely. The vacuum will work for some time after repairing it with electrical tape, but this is a temporary fix.

    Replacement Cord

    • Dyson suggests the power cord should be replaced by a qualified engineer. The part is not available through Dyson, but many vacuum cleaner repair stores and parts dealers have the power cord available for purchase. You can find a Dyson-authorized dealer to replace the cord or purchase the part through a variety of Dyson retail outlets. Although the replacement cord is available, replacement instructions are typically not included.

    Do It Yourself

    • Before attempting to replace the power cord, ensure the vacuum is unplugged from the electrical outlet. Find the screws that encase the power cord to the vacuum unit and unscrew them using a Phillips-head screwdriver to expose the power cord casing. Use a flashlight to find the small plastic clamps that attach the power cord to the unit. The vacuum will have one or two small clamps, depending on the model. Gently detach the old power cord from the small clamps. Attach the new power cord to the clamps. Reassemble the power cord casing by screwing in the screws with a screwdriver.
