How to Get Mold Off a Paradigm Humidifier Sponge

Well-maintained humidors keep cigars fresh with the help of a humidifier that keeps the atmosphere damp, preventing the cigars inside from drying out. Many brands of humidifiers use a sponge as a humidifying agent, including Paradigm humidifiers. Paradigm humidifiers use surgical sponges, which ensure optimum moisture retention. Over time, some sponges may develop traces of mold due to the high level of humidity. Purify mold-infested sponges to ensure the clean, sanitary environment of the humidor.

Instructions

    • 1

Line a work surface with a lint-free cloth.

    • 2

Open the humidor’s lid and remove the humidifier.

    • 3

Dip another lint-free cloth in rubbing alcohol. Wipe any traces of mold or other gunk from the humidifier. Soak the sponge with rubbing alcohol. Leave the alcohol to soak for a few minutes while it kills the mold.

    • 4

Heat distilled water on the stove or in the microwave until it reaches a warm temperature. Do not use tap water, which may contain minerals and other matter that will contaminate the sponge. Submerge the humidifier in the warm water and swish it around for several seconds. Leave the humidifier in the water for a few minutes.

    • 5

Submerge and swish the sponge in fresh distilled water several times to ensure that all the alcohol is flushed from it.

    • 6

      Leave the sponge to dry.

    • 7

Squirt a semi-generous amount of propylene glycol humidifier activator solution onto the sponge. Propylene glycol has antifungal properties and will help maintain proper humidity in the humidor. Wipe off any dribbles on the casing with a lint-free cloth.

    • 8

Return the humidifier to the humidor.
