How to Freshen the Interior of a Microwave Oven

Cooking or reheating food in the microwave adds convenience and saves time on hectic days. But the lack of air ventilation and buildup of food odors and stains can make the interior of your microwave stink. Whether a strong spice odor or burned popcorn smell is wafting out of your microwave, you can freshen the interior by cleaning the inside of the microwave.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water. Slice one lemon and add the slices to the water.

    • 2

Pour 1/4 cup of white vinegar into the lemon and water mixture. Drop in six whole cloves.

    • 3

Place the bowl in the microwave and close the door. Heat the solution for two to 2½ minutes on "High" to bring the solution to a boil. Add more time, if needed.

    • 4
Steam from the lemons and vinegar acts as natural deodorizers.

Leave the bowl of lemon mixture inside the microwave oven after it turns off. Allow the steam to soften stains and deodorize the inside of the microwave while the door is shut.

    • 5

Remove the bowl with the lemon mixture. Wipe the inside of the microwave off with a damp sponge to remove stain material.

    • 6

Dry the interior of the microwave with another cloth. Prop the door open and allow air to circulate for 15 minutes before closing it.
