Safest Way to Remove Peeling Drywall

Homeowners or renovators may have to remove old drywall before repairing a damaged wall. However, there are dangers in removing peeling drywall, as electical wires and plumbing are often right behind the old wall. Turn off the power to your work space from the main circuit breaker. Remove the baseboards, window and door trims, cover plates from the work space with a putty knife, screwdriver and pry bar.

    • 2

Determine the location of wiring, duct work and plumbing lines to avoid damage during drywall removal. The pluming stack usually runs vertically behind the toilet. Vent lines run horizontally about 3 1/2 feet above the floor, while water lines are very low on the wall.

Punch holes in the drywall using a hammer. Use your hands to pull the drywall off the framing.

Continue the process until you have removed all of the drywall.
