Noise Reducers for a Kenmore Vacuum

Kenmore manufactures a variety of home appliances, including several upright and canister vacuums. Noises from a Kenmore vacuum can come from a variety of sources and make the motor work harder. There are several ways to reduce the noises coming from a Kenmore vacuum and make the vacuum run efficiently. Performing standard maintenance, as suggested by Kenmore, will quiet the noises and extend the life of the vacuum.
  1. Noise

    • All Kenmore vacuums have filters, a belt, a brush roll and either a vacuum bag or dust container to collect dust and debris picked up by the vacuum. The vacuum becomes noisy from obstructions in the vacuum and large amounts of dust clogging the filters. When dust accumulates, it collects in the filters. If the filters become clogged, the dust travels to other parts of the vacuum near the motor that operates the vacuum. Obstructions in the brush roll also cause loud noises.

    Upright

    • A Kenmore upright vacuum holds the vacuum bag and filters in the central part of the unit. The brush roller and belt are in the base of the unit. In the central part of the unit, the bag and filters should be replaced. After removing the bag and filters, check in the bag collection area for dust and debris. Remove dust and debris with a lightly dampened rag. The sponge filters can be cleaned using warm water and mild dish detergent. After drying, replace the vacuum bag and reassemble the unit.

    Canister

    • In a Kenmore canister vacuum, the vacuum bag or dust canister and filters are in the canister of the machine. Remove the vacuum bag or dust container from the canister. Remove the motor filter on top of the motor and wash it with warm water and mild dish detergent. The exhaust filter, located on the back of the canister, cannot be washed and should be replaced. Wipe the inside of the canister out with a lightly dampened rag to remove dust and debris. If the canister has a dust container, rinse it in warm water. If the vacuum uses a bag to collect debris, replace the bag. After the filter, dust container and inside of the canister are dry, reassemble the machine.

    Base/Power Wand

    • On a Kenmore upright vacuum, the brush roll is on the base of the unit. Lay the vacuum flat with the base plate facing up. The power wand on the canister vacuum is check by detaching it from the hose and laying it on the floor. Check the brush roll for any debris obstructing it. Cut string away with scissors.
