Hoover Vacuum Starts & Stops

Hoover manufactures a variety of upright and canister vacuums, including bag and bagless styles. Hoover vacuums have a two-year limited warranty that covers defects and workmanship. To diagnose reasons for the vacuum starting and stopping, several things should be checked.
  1. Cord

    • If the vacuum starts and stops while it’s in operation and moving, the cord may have a faulty connection. Turn off the vacuum and unplug it from the electrical outlet. Stretch the cord out its full length and check for exposed or damaged wires. If the cord has no damage, plug the vacuum back in and turn it on. If the vacuum starts and stops while in use, the connection of the cord inside the unit may be faulty.

    Switch

    • The on/off switch on the vacuum may also cause the vacuum to start and stops. The connection in the switch may be disconnected. Turn on the vacuum and let it run for a minute without moving it. If the switch is faulty, the vacuum will most likely start and stop without moving it.

    Hoover Suggestions

    • Along with the switch and cord, Hoover suggests checking the electrical outlet the vacuum is plugged into. Some Hoover vacuums have a thermal protector, which shuts the machine off if it overheats. If the vacuum is warm and the thermal protector is activated, shut down the vacuum for at least 30 minutes before using it again.

    Maintenance

    • Properly stowing the cord and maintaining the vacuum will extend its life. After each use, stretch the length of the cord, remove kinks and wrap the cord around the hooks that hold the cord on the vacuum. For vacuums with retractable cords, follow the same procedures before pressing the cord-retractor button. Replace bags or empty dust containers as needed. Replace or clean the vacuums filters once every few months, depending on how often the vacuum is used. Remove obstructions from the brush roller after each use by cutting away string and hair. Standard maintenance on the vacuum will allow the motor to run properly and not overheat. Not performing standard maintenance voids the warranty.

    Replacing Faulty Parts

    • If the vacuum is covered by the two-year limited warranty, contact Hoover’s customer service or take it to a Hoover authorized warranty service dealer to repair the vacuum at no cost for parts and service. Parts such as a replacement switch or power cord can also be ordered from a vacuum repair store or vacuum parts retailer.
