My Plug on My Vacuum Is Loose, Is There Anything I Can Do About It?

Vacuums sustain damage in time. Even technological advances cannot stand up to the wear and tear of vacuum cleaner usage, children and pets. If the vacuum plug is loose, there are several repair options for the plug without purchasing a new vacuum.
  1. Warranty

    • Check the vacuum’s warranty. If the vacuum’s warranty is valid, contact the number listed in the vacuum’s owner’s manual to find out where the plug can be replaced. Most vacuum manufacturers have authorized dealers where the vacuum can be repaired at no cost under the warranty’s terms and conditions.

    Expired or Voided Warranty

    • If the warranty expired or is void because of misuse of the plug, a vacuum repair store can replace the plug for a fee. Misuse includes a bent plug from stepping on it or pulling it from the electrical outlet from the power cord. Always unplug the vacuum by removing it from the plugs casing from the electrical outlet.

    DIY

    • Most hardware and home improvement stores have replacement plugs. Purchase a grounded replacement plug that fits your vacuum model. Turn off the vacuum and unplug it from the outlet. Remove a portion of the power cord near the plug with wire cutters to expose the wires. Cut at least 1 inch of the outer plastic covering that protects the wires. Three wires are exposed. Strip one-half inch of the insulation of each wire. Slide the replacement plug’s casing over the cord. Insert the wires into the new plug’s connection terminals. The connection terminal may require the wires to be screwed on securely using a flathead screwdriver. Some connection terminals have a simple leaver that opens with a flathead screwdriver and closed to clamp the wire securely. Attach the plug’s casing and use a flathead screwdriver to screw the casing to the cord securely.

    Care and Maintenance

    • Winding the cord properly on the vacuum before storing it for future use avoids further damage. Remove the plug by gripping the plug casing and removing it from the electrical outlet after the vacuum is turned off. Wrap the power cord onto the hooks on the vacuum after each use to avoid the plug being stepped on or bent. If the vacuum has a retractable power cord, ensure the length of the cord is straight before pushing the retraction button.
