How to Clean Stove Burners & Electronic Igniters

For a stove to operate efficiently, it needs to be able to provide heat evenly along the surface of a pot or pan placed over the burner. In order to do this, the burner must remain clean, with none of its openings clogged by grease or food debris. Cleaning the stove’s burners and igniters is part of the regular maintenance required to keep your stove in working order. The process isn’t difficult, and involves no harsh chemical cleaners to complete. The only things required are a few items commonly found in any household, and a bit of scrubbing.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the grates from the stove top. Grasp the front of the stove top and lift the hood upwards, tilting the top along the hinges at the rear. Lift the metal stand from the side of the stove top cavity and place the hook on the end into the small hole on the underside of the stove top to prop it in the upward position, giving you full access to the burners and igniters.

    • 2

Pull the round burner assembly from the burner support arm by sliding it away from the burner valve port in the center of the stove top and lifting it free. The burner assembly consists of the round burner that the flames flow from and the flash tube connected to the burner, which connects the burner to the center of the stove and allows it to pass gas to the burner.

    • 3

Clean out the flash tube connected to the side of the round burner with a pipe cleaner. Take a needle and poke it through each of the small holes around the edge of the burner to clean them out. Brush the rest of the burner clean with a toothbrush.

    • 4

Clean the small hole in the burner valve out with the needle. Slide the burner back into place.

    • 5

Locate the igniter by searching for a small ceramic cylinder with wires attached to it. The igniter is located between the burners on each side of the stove.

    • 6

Brush any debris present on the igniter, as well as on the metal wire running from the cylinder that works as a ground for the igniter, off using a toothbrush. Lower the stove top hood and turn on the stove to test the cleaning job. If correctly cleaned, the gas will flow freely through the holes in the burner with the igniter lighting the burner quickly within a few clicks.
