Why the Motor Is Overheating on a NuTone Central Vac

NuTone manufactures a variety of products, including ventilation systems, fans and central vacuum systems. NuTone central vacuum models include the CV400 and the VX series. The VX series has bag and bagless models. If the motor is overheating on a NuTone central vacuum unit, there are several ways to diagnose the central vacuum unit to improve its function and prevent overheating.
  1. Indicator Lights

    • The central vacuum unit is installed in an area of the home such as a utility room, basement or garage. Due to the central unit’s location, problems are often not immediately detected. The central unit is equipped with indicator lights to show when bags and filters need changing. It also has a detector to indicate if the machine is overheating, which turns the machine off for safety reasons. If the machine feels warm but the detector does not shut the machine off, it is not overheating, according to NuTone’s standards.

    Electrical Outlet

    • The central unit plugs into an electrical outlet, operating the machine and its attachments throughout the house. Ensure that the electrical outlet attached to the central unit’s plug is the proper voltage. NuTone suggests contacting an electrician to ensure the electrical outlet is properly grounded and the proper outlet is installed to operate the unit.

    Collection Container and Filter

    • Some NuTone models that use a bag to collect dust and debris require frequent bag replacement. Bagless units use a collection pail. The unit has an indicator light to show when the bag or collection pail should be replaced. An unnoticed full bag or collection pail may cause the machine to run hotter. The machine can also loose suction if the bag is not properly installed. Replace the bag in the unit or empty the collection pail. With the collection pail removed, put a trash can under the unit. Tap on the filter inside the unit to remove excess dust and debris. Reassemble the unit.

    Exhaust Pipe

    • The unit is installed with an exhaust pipe and utility valve on the exhaust pipe. If the exhaust is blocked, the machine will run hot. Open the utility valve to check the exhaust pipe. A long, thin bristle brush can remove debris. Go to the location of the end of the exhaust pipe and check for any blockages.

    Warranty

    • Each model of the NuTone central vacuum has a limited warranty. The extent of the warranty depends on the model, ranging from one to eight years. If, after performing standard maintenance to the unit, the motor is overheating, check the warranty and contact NuTone’s customer service to find an authorized dealer. If the central vacuum is under warranty, an authorized dealer will perform repairs at no cost.
