How to Get Soot Out of an Oven

The oven is often the last place to be cleaned in the kitchen. Food and grease residue build up naturally and soot stains from burned food can coat the inside of the oven. In addition to the unsightly appearance, soot in the oven can affect the flavor of your food. You can get soot stains out of the oven by cleaning it with supplies that effectively cut through grease-laden soot and leave the inside of your oven clean without scratching the surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the racks inside the oven for easier access to the interior surfaces.

    • 2

Dampen a paper towel and wipe crumbs and loose soot dust from the surfaces. Scrape off burned-on stains with a razor-edged scraper until removed.

    • 3

Wet paper towels with ammonia and blot the surface of the inside of your oven until it's damp. Allow the ammonia to sit on the surface for five minutes to break down the grease in the soot.

    • 4

Sprinkle baking soda over the ammonia-dampened surfaces until covered.

    • 5
White vinegar naturally cleans and cuts grease.

Fill a spray bottle with 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1/4 cup water. Spritz the oven surface with the vinegar solution.

    • 6

Scrub your oven interior with a nylon mesh sponge to remove the remaining soot stains.

    • 7

Rinse the sponge with warm water as the soot is removed. Apply more vinegar spray, as needed, and sprinkle the sponge with baking soda to remove stubborn stains.

    • 8

Dry the inside of your oven with paper towels.
