How to Clean a Burnt Item From the Dishwasher

When running the dishwasher, items made of plastic can melt when positioned too close to the heating coils. By the time the burnt plastic smell starts wafting through your kitchen, the damage has already been done inside your dishwasher. If the burned item is left unattended, the smell will be recreated each time you run the dishwasher until the item is completely burned away. To avoid the unpleasant smell and potential damage to the interior of your dishwasher, you must clean the burned-on residue from the inside of your dishwasher.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Prop open the dishwasher door and allow the inside to cool.

    • 2

Scrape burned-on residue from the inside of the dishwasher with a razor-edged scraper. Discard the removed residue and continue to scrape to remove as much as possible.

    • 3

Saturate a clean cloth with acetone-based nail polish remover. Lay the cloth over any remaining burned residue stains. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes to dissolve the remaining material.

    • 4

Remove the cloth from the dishwasher surface. Scrape softened burned-on residue from your dishwasher surface with the razor-edged scraper.

    • 5

Moisten a cloth with undiluted white vinegar. Sprinkle baking soda over the cloth for extra scrubbing and deodorizing power.

    • 6

Clean the interior of your dishwasher to remove any last traces of residue and remove accompanying odor. Rinse the baking soda off by wiping the surface with a damp cloth.

    • 7

Dry the inside of your dishwasher with another cloth.
