How to Clean the Grates on a Whirlpool Refrigerator

The grate on a Whirlpool refrigerator protects the appliance's machinery, namely the condenser coils located behind the grate. Grates -- also known as base grilles -- can collect dirt from their location close to the floor, as well as drips and spills from the refrigerator. The best method for cleaning them depends on the grate's material -- either painted metal or stainless steel. Whirlpool recommends unplugging your refrigerator for safety before any cleaning project.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the base grille for easier cleaning access. Open the refrigerator doors and grasp both ends of the grate. Push the top corners in with your thumbs while pulling the bottom toward you to remove.

    • 2

Dip a soft cloth or sponge in warm water and add a few drops of a mild detergent to clean painted metal grates. Rub the cloth or sponge over the grate, gently scrubbing trouble spots. Rinse with warm water, dry with a clean cloth and replace the grate.

    • 3

For stainless steel grates, mix 1 tablespoon of mild detergent with several cups of warm water, then wet a sponge in the solution. Wipe the sponge in the direction of the stainless steel grain. Rinse the grate with fresh water, dry it with a soft cloth and replace it.

Replace the grate by lining up the support tabs on the inner side with the metal clips on the grille base. Push the grate back into place. Plug your Whirlpool refrigerator in again.
